Sugar-Free Lent: Day Five

Sugar-Free Lent: Day Five

Oh Dear, I know that you can have delusions but I don't think that I'm so much on cold turkey. But I can SMELL cake. While I was out shopping I could smell a banana loaf. There was no such thing in sight.

On my way home I could smell the vanilla slice I didn't have just before I went sugar-free. And there was such a sweet smell in the air the closer I got home. Mind you, we live near a industrial bakery and it has been known that the surroundings smelled of doughnuts.

But apart from that, I still feel fine. well, almost. My liver was hurting very much yesterday, maybe I had a bit more cheese than I usually would have. I also had a bit of an energy dip around midday again.

And I made that wonderful quick and easy bread I was talking about yesterday. No sugar involved, not even to feed the yeast, no kneading of the dough and no time to sit and raise. You just mix:

  • 400 g of wholemeal flour, you could use spelt flour if you like
  • 300 g of seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, linseed or sesame seed or whatever you like
  • 100 g of buckwheat flour

in a bowl.

In a jug you mix

  • 500 ml of water with
  • 3 tablespoons of cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • and 50 g of fresh yeast

Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and mix well together. It should be quite soft. Pour it into a well buttered square tin and bake for an hour at 160℃ .

This is how mine turned out:

And it tastes really nice!
