Sugar-free Lent: Day Three

Sugar-Free Lent: Day Three

Not eating sugar made me actually think a lot more about sugar. When I go shopping I stand in front of the shelves, looking at all those labels and wish that I could be "normal" and just eat what I like. But I can't and if I want to avoid too much sugar in the future I will never be able to buy "normal" stuff again.

So out of interest I looked at the hot cross buns, I once regarded as "breakfast" -buns, so something I would eat with butter and jam.

I was horrified. Some of the luxury version had a sugar content as high as 19,5 grams in one 78 gram bun. And I would have eaten that with butter and JAM.

And maybe not only one!

That is an awful lot of sugar. So out of interest I looked at the bread I usually buy and there was 3,9 gram of sugar for 2 slices. And again, with peanut butter and jam on top of that, that would add up to an awful amount of sugar.

So how much is 19,5 gram of sugar? I rush to the kitchen, get my scales out and fill a little dish with 19,5 gram of sugar. And it looks like this:

Well, that might be a bit more because my scales cannot weigh out 19,5 grams so it is something between 19 gram and nearly 20 gram.

Out of interest I also weighed 4 gram of sugar, the amount which is almost in 2 slices of wholemeal bread. And it looks like this:

That is not naturally occurring sugar, well not all of it because it is stated on the package that the bread contains brown sugar.

Think about that. Do you really want to eat so much sugar just for breakfast? I don't ,so I'm going to make my own bread. I have a recipe which is quick and easy.

I wished I could be just "normal" but maybe it is not me that is not normal!

  1. It's amazing how sugar sneaks into everything. No pudding for you this evening though. That will test your willpower! Seriously though, are you able to eat dried fruits eg prunes?

    1. It occurred to me yesterday when I emailed my friend in Austria, that I won't be able to have the Sticky Toffee Pudding I ordered for tonight. Not to test my willpower but what do I do with the pudding?????? I made the rule, that I will not eat any dried fruit either because they are very sweet, only fresh fruit is permitted. But, no doubt, it will keep me on my toes.
