Sugar-Free Lent: Day Thirty-Seven

Sugar-Free Lent: Day Thirty-Seven!

It happened. I ate sugar. And I did it without realsing what I was doing.

So we went to a Fair-Trade event in the Town Hall yesterday to get informed. And as a lot of Fair-Trade stuff is actually sugar, coffee, tea and chocolate, a LOT of CHOCOlATE was on sale. My husband even bought some but there were samples of it and biscuits made with Fair-Trade ingredients which was all very nice. I didn't have ANY of that only a involuntary sniff at my husbands chocolate. I was standing next to him while he was opening it.

By the way, it was a really interesting evening and it brought home how important it is to buy Fair-Trade products and support the farmers.

After a brisk walk home in the cold I found that I was really hungry, sniffing and withstanding all those goodies. I bought a nice pack of pumpernickel in the Polish deli on Saturday and I was looking forward to eating it. I thought that I could have that for a change and it would save me baking at the weekend.

The pumpernickel was from a German company and in Germany the pumpernickel from that Company contains just rye, yeast, salt and water. So I didn't check the label when I bought it. Anyway, everything on the label was in Polish, so even if I would have checked it I would not have understood a word.

Back home then I opened the pack and got a slice out. I spread some cream cheese on the slice and took a bite. It was quite some time ago since I had pumpernickel but it tasted sooo sweet. I said to my husband, that I could not remember pumpernickel being so sweet. So I checked the package and tried to make sense of the Polish words. The word s"syrop z burakow cukrowych" made me suspicious. So first thing in the morning I took to Google Translate and painstakingly typed in the Polish ingredients list. And guess what: The word "syrop z burakow cukrowych" means sugarbeet syrup.

That just show how careful you have to be. The next time I buy pumpernickel I will definitely read the ingredients list. But what do I do with the Polish pumpernickel? Anyone up for pumpernickel? It is really nice, just sooo sweet.
