Sugar-Free Lent: Day Thirty-One

Sugar-Free Lent: Day Thirty-One!

We were sitting at the dinner table the other day eating our sugar-free dinner and discussing what we were going to have the next evening. My husband suggested chicken and leek pies. I always stock some of my favourite chicken and leek pies in the freezer because I love them.

Cautious as I am at the moment I said: "That is a wonderful idea BUT let me check if there is any sugar in the pie, just to be on the safe side." So I went to the freezer after dinner and got the pie out. And there it was: SUGAR which amounted to a hefty 6 gram in a  250 gram pie.  I checked the steak and ale pie but again there was SUGAR even though there it was called MOLASSES. And it was even more than in the chicken and leek pie. It was 9 gram.

That is the other thing about sugar. It has many names and sometimes it is difficult to identify it. It is called glucose or glucose syrup, fructose, glucose-fructose syrup, dextrose, maltose or even concentrated apple or orange juice.

I'm quite sure that you can find a list of it on the Internet if you google it. But be aware SUGAR is sometimes not just SUGAR.
