Sugar-Free Lent: Day Nineteen

Sugar-Free Lent: Day Nineteen!

So yesterday morning, after going shopping, which was a nightmare by the way, I spent all morning baking!

Shopping is a bit of a nightmare at the moment because I'm dressed up for Siberian weather in a heated English supermarket, reading food labels to see if there is any sugar on the ingredients list. And because I have grown suspicious I even check the list of cream cheese to see if they sneaked in something even I wouldn't expect to be there. So I was sweating like you know what and nearly forgot about the shopping list. That I want to have my food organic didn't particularly help with getting what I needed.

So back home I made another loaf where I used different flours and seeds but I haven't tried it yet. It looks good. And then I made some nice and easy seed crackers, and English muffins. I love English muffins but they, too, contain added sugar, and this sums up to 2,3 grams of it per muffin. In my huge collection of recipes I found one which didn't contain sugar at all. It was hard work and took a long time.

I wonder sometimes why they call them Breakfast-Muffins because I didn't finish them before 2 pm. We had them for lunch which was not a problem because we were going to go to the Mayors' Dinner Dance this evening, so dinner would be late. And the muffins were really filling, I couldn't eat 2 of them and my husband managed only half of it.

But the real struggle of the day was not over. At the Dinner Dance we sat down to a set 3-course dinner which was lovely. Well, lovely for me till the dessert arrived. I was the last person on a table of 10 to receive my main course but I must have sent out some signals because I was the FIRST to get the pudding.

And there it was, starring at me: Nice lush disks of meringue with a layer of lemon curd between them and a strawberry compote.

I must admit that my mouth watered but I showed a great strength of will power because I DIDN'T touch it. It went away as it came because my husband couldn't eat two of them.

The English muffin and seed crackers I made. No, don't compare them with the pudding I missed yesterday!
